About the Class
Appropriate for beginning or beginning intermediate students, the class will focus on building a foundation for
belly dance through the basics: proper dance posture, isolations, drills, combinations, strengthening exercises,
and stretches. Each session you will learn a combination consisting of several moves. New moves get added
each week and we build upon the layers throughout the session. For the more advanced beginner, additional
layers are added for even more challenge. Emphasis will be on learning proper technique and form.
Finger cymbals will be used incorporating them with movement. Basic Middle Eastern rhythms will be introduced.
The class will help build a foundation of techniques, moves, muscle memory, and confidence so that you can
successfully move up to the next level of the dance.
What to Wear and Bring
Please wear exercise clothing that is not constricting and that in which you can easily see your body movements.
We will be doing exercises on the floor so wear appropriate clothing and bring a yoga mat if you wish. Bring a
hip scarf and finger cymbals if you have them. There are a few for students to borrow and some available for
purchase.
About the Instructor
Katherine has fond childhood memories of dancing in the living room with her mother. Since then she has danced
and enjoyed several styles of dance, including Country, Swing, Contra, Waltz, Cape Breton Step, Aerobic, and
Belly Dance. After seeing Gypsy Caravan perform at Bumbershoot in Seattle, she was immediately captured by
the earthy movements, the music, and the ethnic costuming of Tribal belly dance and she embarked on her belly
dance journey. She is a founding member of Wild Serenity Dance Tribe and owner of Silk Road Tribal, a retail
business providing ethnic jewelry and textiles to Tribal belly dancers.
